Desert Waterfalls and the Wallpaper of the Month

Anna and I went out for a drive this past Saturday and enjoyed the beautiful weather and Tucson scenery. On our trip we came across a little water and some "DEADLY WATERFALLS". This time of year the stream is pretty tame, but it is obvious that there has been some pretty serious flash-flooding in the past.

The January Wallpaper of the Month

The Wallpaper of the Month is going to be changing (just a little). First of all, they are actually going to be monthly wallpapers as opposed to bi-monthly or more. Life always tends to happen and before I know it, a couple months have gone by. Second, the Wallpaper of the Month will now be included in the monthly Wilson Photography Newsletter. Once a month I will be sending out a quick update with the latest news, adventures and photography, as well as a link to the current month's wallpaper.

Preston and Amanda | A Vintage Arizona Wedding

Preston and Amanda celebrated their big day on December 3rd, 2011, at the Arizona Pioneer Living History Village. It is a bit of a mouthful to say, but it's a beautiful place to get married. It also fit Preston and Amanda to a T. ("To a T" is something people often say, but never actually write.)

The ceremony was followed by a lovely reception at the residence of Amanda's parents.

More often than not I just click "delete", however, on occasion I do browse the email for a little inspiration. As you can see, I was inspired! Jason and Valerie | A Tucson Engagement

I have known Jason and Valerie almost as long as I have been in Tucson. A year ago March I had the privilege of going on (and photographing) a surprise hot air balloon ride for Valerie. If you have never seen the adventure, then check it out here. Now, a year and a half later, Jason and Valerie are officially engaged; and I once again had the privilege of photographing them. Congratulations to you both!

We started our shoot at the Hilton El Conquistador Resort, and finished with a traditional southern Arizona landscape over at Gates Pass. We couldn't have asked for a better day to do pictures!

Arizona Theatre Company Gala 2011

This years Gala marked the 45th aniversarry for the Arizona Theatre Company. The night was filled with drinks, food, a live auction, dancing and a performance by Academy Award nominee Javetta Steele. Although the evening began with some very unusual rain showers for this time of year; it did clear up in time for Dinner.

Brian and Raimee | Colorado Engagement Shoot

Brian and Raimee flew me up to Denver to do their engagement pictures. It was a very quick trip as life was waiting for me back in Tucson, but totally worth it. We started our shoot in Idaho Springs and then made our way down to LODO (Lower Downtown, Denver). It's always good to catch up with great friends!

The Woes of Color

For the past year I had been using an old Sony Laptop that was given to me. It was made in the mid 90's, sounded like a dinosaur and moved like one too. I wasn't going to complain though as it did what I needed it to do. A couple weeks ago though I finally gave in and invested in a new new laptop as I realized I was wasting a lot of time waiting on Vaio-Rex (My laptop).

As a photographer it is essential that I have a quality screen that is color calibrated; so that is one of the first things I did after getting everything set up. After about 20 minutes the world of color was back in order and everything was looking good. Everything until I opened Chrome to update my blog that is. I quickly realized that my images in Chrome looked a lot lot different than my images in Bridge and Photoshop. After a little research I found out that this wasn't a user error, but a problem with Chrome; Chrome doesn't color manage. To make a long story short, I have made the switch back to Firefox as it provides the option of color managing.

All this to ensure that you, the client, gets the best images possible!

An American Road Trip

We left for Tucson after spending about a week and a half with the family in Fort Collins. We decided to take our time and make a mini-vacation out of it.

A little over a five hour drive from Fort Collins is the San Luis Valley, Great Sand Dunes National Park, and Zapata Falls. Zapata Falls is only a couple miles from the Park Entrance, so we decided to make that our first stop. A couple miles up from the main road you come to the parking lot which overlooks the San Luis Valley and the Sand Dunes. The falls are about a quarter mile from the parking lot.

Zapata Falls is almost back in a little cave. To get there you have to do some wading through the creek.

The water was VERY COLD, and after a few minutes in it I was a little numb. Totally worth it though.

It was a little over a mile, and just under an hour, to get to the top of High Dune. High Dune stands 650 feet above the valley floor and is the second highest dune in the park.

There were some controlled burns on the North Rim of the Canyon, and for the most of the time it was fairly filled with smoke. On one hand it was a little disappointing, but at the same time it did make for some unique photos. All in all we had a fantastic trip

Fall Update

As many of you know, my wife Anna and I have recently returned to the States from China. Although our time in China was wonderful, we are glad to be back in the States for this next season of life.

Since being back in the States we have:

Gotten "America" married
Had a wedding reception and BBQ in Colorado
Taken a road trip through Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona
Made the move to Tucson

The past couples weeks we have been busy getting settled in and, for me, reconnected with the Tucson community. It's good to be back Tucson!

First of all we have a couple pictures from our marriage in the park. We kept our American wedding VERY simple with just Anna, my parents, and me. We went to the court house, picked up a marriage license, then went to City Park to fill it out. We had already gotten married in China and just wanted to make it America legal.

I spent a couple weeks going through the image archives selecting the best of the best to make available as wallpapers. September Wallpaper of the Month - Fort Collins, Colorado

Yes, I know it's October already, but as they say, "better late than never." This was taken the first week of September just outside Fort Collins. On the left you can see Horsetooth Reservoir stretching off to the north. Beautiful!

Yangshuo, China

I just realized as I was catching up a little work, that these pictures never got posted to the blog. Just before leaving China Anna and I took a four day trip to a nearby province. We caught a night train in Guangzhou and arrived in Guilin the next morning. It was quite the experience.

Guangzhou, China

Cliff, a student of mine, treated Anna and me to a tour around Guangzhou the Saturday before Anna and I went to Yangshuo. The three of us took a bus from Dongguan to Guangzhou. Cliff's brother met us in Guangzhou and drove us around for the day.

Our first stop was the Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall. Sun Yat Sen was the predecessor of the Chinese revolution for democracy.

Our next stop was Shamian Island. This island was divided and given to both France and England by the Qing Dynasty government. With its colonial architecture, Shamian Island feels more western than Chinese.

"Nature's engineering can be replaced by human creations. Manpower is better than natural creations. The human world is created in a way like this. A visiting here surpasses learning from books for ten years." Although I can't say I agree with Mr. Guo Moruo's statement, I did find the Chen Family Academy an amazing place to visit.

The Five-Ram sculpture in Yuexiu Park has become an important symbol of the Guangzhou people. It is an important part of their city, and was an excellent way to finish up our tour.

August Wallpaper of the Month - Yangshuo, China

Anna and I spent a wonderful four days in Yangshuo before leaving China for the States. Yangshuo is about a 12 hour train ride from Guangzhou and is famous for its distinct karst landscape. One evening just after sunset we hiked up a small peak in the central city park for this photograph.

One Last Trip to Hong Kong

I really didn't expect us to be going back to Hong Kong after our previous visit. Not because it wasn't a good trip, it was fantastic, but because it just wasn't fitting into our plans. This was of course until Anna and I were given a very nice gift to stay in the Marco Polo Hotel. We just couldn't pass it up!

We only stayed for one night but had a great time walking around Tsim Sha Tsui, where the Marco Polo is located, and Victoria Harbour.

For many years the Ball Tower was used by ships in the Harbor to synchronize their clocks. Everyday at 1pm someone would raise and drop the ball. This was visible from all over the harbor, and when it was seen, all the ships would set their clocks to 1:00.

Mike and Cathy | Dongguan Engagement

When I was originally talking with Cathy about doing engagement pictures, she mentioned that both her and Mike wanted to have them done at Keyuan Garden. Not only is a beautiful place for pictures, but it was also one of the first places that they went together. We got there just after the garden opened and spent about an hour and half working our way through the labyrinth of passageways and gardens taking photos. Mike and Cathy are a great couple and were very easy to work with.

Keyuan Garden only has an 8¥ admission, which is totally worth it, and is one place I will be sure to visit again before leaving Dongguan.

Hong Kong

We went to Hong Kong on Friday night to help my sister-in-law get all her things to the airport. On Saturday morning we took the Metro from the Airport and began our adventure.

We saw the Bank of China Tower on our way to our first destination. It is a famous building known for its architecture (If you follow architecture at all).

The Peak Tram.

The Tram takes you to the top of the peak over looking the city and Victoria Harbor. It is well worth the money if you have a clear day.

Hong Kong and Victoria Harbor.

On Saturday afternoon we went over to the other side of the island. Although it is still a part of Hong Kong, it has a vastly different feeling.

To get across the island we took a double-decker bus. Not only did it provide great views, but it was also a little like a roller coaster.

One benefit of being in an international city is international food. We were both super excited about enjoying some Mexican!

Lady Street is a famous street markett in Hong Kong known for its shopping, good quality copies and bargaining. This was on our way to Lady street. I was amazed by the crowds.

July Wallpaper of the Month - Victoria Harbor, Hong Kong

I have always seen pictures of Hong Kong and thought "what a beautiful city"; but I never thought I would make it there. You know how life is sometimes though; in January I found myself in China and last weekend I was in Hong Kong.

Anna and I had a fantastic time touring the city, visiting the harbor, visiting the beach and eating some long awaited Mexican food. I will post more pictures and information about our fantastic trip in the next couple days.

I have been told that 20 years ago Dongguan was little more than a poor farming community. Now it is a bustling metropolis of around 7 million people and is growing every day. The rate at which things are growing and changing is incredible. In this image you can see the many layers of change present in Dongguan.

Songshan Lake

A couple months ago I made a trip to Songshan lake with a family that Anna and I know. Our first stop was at a 'traiditional' local farm near the lake. I really don't know how traditional it actually was, but it was interesting to see none the less.

After the farm we went to another part of the lake to walk around and have lunch. We ate at this famous restaurant that during the week only caters to Government officials. I wasn't overly impressed by the restaurant, but did enjoy the experience.

May Wallpaper of the Month

Rain, lightning and a beautiful sunset all made for this gorgeous Dongguan evening. We live on the 21st floor of an apartment building with an amazing view (on clear days) to the north. Many days you can only see less than five miles due to the haze, but because of the recent rain the air has been a good bit clearer. On a downside, this is why you don't go out and play in the rain because it is full of pollutants.

I took around 150 pictures and ended up with only two that had any lightning. Although the lightning was fairly sporadic, it was worth the wait.

Dongguan Streets

I like to get out now and then and capture the everyday life I see around me. From school children in uniforms waiting for a bus, to business people in suits riding bicycles. As a foreigner some of the things I see seem quite peculiar, although I am sure the same could be said by a Chinese expat in America. Thanks for looking!

YinPing Shan

YinPing Shan, or as you would say it in English, Silver Bottle Mountain, is the tallest mountain in Dongguan. Although it was technically in Dongguan it was still about a a 50 minute drive over there. Many thanks to my friend Jason for putting together another hike and for providing the transportation over to the mountain!

The hike to the top of YinPing Shan covered about 6 miles and 2400 feet of elevation, most of which was steps. I am finding out that this is the Chinese way.

Xue Lian Mountain

This past Sunday morning I went hiking with my friend Jason, whom I recently met at a couples study, along with some of his family and friends. We went to Xue Nian Mountain about 20 minutes south of where I live (it took me a while to understand the name of the mountain). Even though their were so many people, it was still a beautiful getaway from the normal hustle and bustle of city life.

Joseph and Stacey: Phoenix Wedding

Joseph and Stacey got married on a gorgeous October day in Phoenix, Arizona. My friend Michael Chansley passed the job along to me as he was booked for the day, which turned out to be a great blessing. I was driving back from a visit up to Colorado, and was able to make the convenient detour through Phoenix for their wedding.
Joseph and Stacey had a small ceremony at Hermosa Inn, a quaint little "Resort" in the heart of Phoenix, and a much larger reception the next day at the Foothills Golf Club. Both the ceremony and reception were absolutely beautiful and a lot of fun.

"Unity Sand" and "Unity Candles" are both very popular traditions for a lot of couples these days. Joseph and Stacey, however, chose to do things a little different. Being that they are both big wine connoisseurs, they decided to each pick their favorite wine to mix together into one new and distinct flavor. How unique!

I'm Married!

Anna and I got married here in Dongguan on January 29th, 2011. We had a very small ceremony, four of us plus the minister, and it couldn't have been better. We did however miss seeing all of our friends and family and as a result are planning a couple wedding parties for them when we come back to the States.

Anna's older sister was a huge help in a lot of ways, including taking all the candid pictures before and after the ceremony. I have included a couple of the candids along with the formal portraits I did of us after the ceremony.

Chinese New Year!

Hello from the other side of the world! Anna and I left for Dongguan, China, January 9th and officially arrived here late on the 10th. We both flew into the Guangzhou airport about an hour apart and were greeted by two of Anna's good Chinese friends.

This past month has been spent getting settled, finding part time work and of course getting married (pictures to follow soon). As a result I have not been afforded much time to go out photographing. All that being said though, I did not want to completely miss the Chinese New Year. Here are several pictures from the past few weeks.

I'm Engaged!!!

Anna is definitely the story teller of the relationship and could probably write a complete novel about everything that led up to this point. I, on the other hand, am not. That being said, I will still share a couple quick points.

First, I couldn't have asked for a more amazing woman. Anna is everything I dreamed of and more.
Second, doing your own engagement pictures is quite a bit different than doing someone else's. When you have 10 seconds to get from on top of a cliff to lying in the grass next to your fiancée... while looking natural... you get the picture.

Martinez Family Pictures

I originally met the Martinez family back in August when I did their son Nick's senior pictures. I loved working with them then and was excited about the opportunity to do their family portraits. We went down along the river in Golden and caught some beautiful fall colors and weather, what a great time!

Angela and Joe : Fort Collins Wedding

I made another trip up to Colorado for Angela and Joe's wedding. The trip was absolutely beautiful with all the fall colors; but I will have to save those details for another post. Dave and Juju: Tucson Wedding

Dave and Juju's wedding is one that has been a long time coming. Juju is from India, and it was only in the last couple months that God finally worked things out for her coming over to the States. I know they were both very excited for this day to finally come. The wedding was down at the The First United Methodist Church, where the wedding was held, is the oldest mainline denomination church in Tucson and was originally built in 1879. The reception was help in the original building.

Some of the Goshen Ministries Choir provided some amazing worship and dance during the reception. The choir "performs Christian songs in Swahili, Kirundi, French and English. The members are all refugees from Congo, Tanzania, Burundi, and Chad and are in their early teens and mid twenties." I loved watching them perform, very cool

Julia | Tucson Senior Pictures

I originally met Julia and her family about two years ago when I started attending their church. Even though we no longer attend church together, we have thankfully been able to keep in touch and I had the opportunity to do Julia's senior pictures. Melissa | Thornton Senior Pictures

Update Pt. 2

Washington was beautiful, especially out on the coast. 70* Weather, partly sunny and only a couple sprinkles. I'm not sure as if I would want to live there, but it was great for a visit.

We spent a day down at the beach, went crabbing, and just enjoyed ourselves. The thing about crabbing that surprised me is that you don't through the crab in some boiling water and cook it. You take the live crab, rip it's shell off, scoop its guts out and then tear it in half. Morbid sounding, I know, but oh so good tasting.

A couple days later we took the Ferry over to Friday Harbor for a couple hours (The previous wallpaper was from that trip) It was definitely a beautiful trip.

I finished up my trip with a day down in Seattle. I went down to Pike Place Market with my cousin Pam, went to the original Starbucks, and took the monorail over to the space needle. I love the feel of downtown Seattle.

August Wallpaper of the Month + Update

I left Tucson August 5th and since them have been to Colorado, through Wyoming, Montana and Idaho, and have spent time both in eastern and western Washington. I have definitely enjoyed myself, but am also at the point where I am ready to get home. Through Montana we caught some rain and low lying clouds which was quite the treat considering I am living in Tucson.

While up in Northeastern Washington, we spent a day four-wheeling and exploring in the mountains. About the only "wild" life we saw were some cows, but it was still a great time.

After leaving eastern Washington we took the North Cascade route through Winthrop, over the Cascades and down to the coast. There must be something in the water of "Diablo Lake" as there is nothing natural looking about it.

I'll finish up my travels in the next post. For now, enjoy this months wallpaper. This was taken on a ferry between Anacortes and Friday Harbor, Mount Baker can be seen in the distance.

Parker | Denver Senior Pictures

Parker is a Grandview High Senior and is my first senior for the class of 2011. Congratulations to all those entering their senior year!
We went down to LODO (Lower Downtown) in Denver for an early Saturday morning shoot and had a great time. LODO is probably one of my favorite places to shoot as it offers such a wide variety of amazing locations within a small area (and Parker is probably the only high school student I have ever met that is a morning person)

It's the small things in life... A few weeks back not long after I woke up; I walked outside and was amazed to find all this white puffy stuff in the sky. For those living in the rest of the country, you might not be so amazed by a few scattered clouds; but after what seemed like a couple months; they were a welcome, and foreign, sight.

You may remember this picture from a while back from a small series I did downtown. Being that is is monsoon season once again though I felt it was an appropriate wallpaper for July

Inspiration for the Day

I Subscribe to several RSS Feeds of different photographers who's work I admire and/or find inspiring. Today I came across a couple videos that I found absolutely amazing. One involved buying a hundred cameras and tethering them together to capture the same moment in time from different angels (a little out of my budget although amazingly cool). The other just involved a bit of creativity and planning. (Something I can handle)

This video (and the photography) was done by Scott McClellan; a artist whom I think is based out of California. You can see some more of his work here

If anybody wants to have a good time and be a part of a creative endeavor such of this; it would be a lot of fun to put something together!

Taking a Photograph to the Next Level: Post-Production

There are a lot of things that can be done at the time of capture to make a great photograph; from depth of field and shutter speed to the location and lighting used. The end result is what you see in the picture to the left. No, it's not bad by any means, but that doesn't mean a little post-production TLC couldn't make it better. If it was practical to retouch every photograph I took I probably would; but that would mean I didn't have a life away from my desk, or time to actually take pictures.

So what did I do to the photograph on the right? The most obvious thing is the selective-focus effect. Although it's fairly subtle it is still effective in focusing your eye on the bride and groom. Besides that I applied a slight vignette, brought out the sky a touch, toned down the red dress and gave everything a subtle pop. Oh, and I also took out a leaf from the foreground.

Remember the small details for they are what make a good photograph great.

Joshua and Taryn - Tucson, Arizona Wedding

Joshua and Taryn first met while attending a school of ministry out in California. I had only met Joshua maybe a handful of times before the wedding, and Taryn a handful more before we started wedding planning. It was great getting to know both of them a little better, as well as Taryn's family through the the process. Many blessings to both of you!

It seems like every time I post wedding pictures I include more and more of them. I would like to think it is because each wedding turns out better than the previous one; I'll let you be the judge of that though! Thank you to Michael Chansley for his help with the guys formal pictures and during the ceremony!

I met up with the girls over at Traildust town for the formals. Despite the fact that it was 1:15 in the afternoon and about 115*, the pictures turned out great.

Derrick and Brittany - Tucson Engagement

Derrick and Brittany have been together off and on for nearly ten; and will be getting married on the ten year anniversary since they first started dating. Despite the fact that it is June in Tucson, we had a great time shooting downtown before heading up Mount Lemmon to finish up the shoot. The weather up there was just about perfect. Thank you to my friend Karissa for being a great assistant, and congratulations to Derrick and Brittany on your engagement and upcoming wedding!

Dooley Wilhelm Wedding with Travis Williams Photography

A month, two or three ago, man how time flies, I had the opportunity to second shoot a wedding with Travis Williams Photograph. It's always great working with Travis; and it is always such a good experience working with other photographers to learn and grow. I always seem to pick up little tricks along the way. It was a beautiful Tucson spring wedding at Oasis at Wild Horse and a great couple.

The Barfoot Lookout Cabin is located at 8823 Feet above sea level high in the Chiricahua Mountains. It was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in 1935 for the detection of wildfires. In the center distance you can see Cochise Head

Rustler Park - Chiricahua Mountains

100* in Tucson, 75* at Rustler Park; I think that is enough reason right there to get out camping. Rustler Park is about 130 miles to the east of Tucson in the Chiricahua mountains, and is situated at 8500'. It was almost like being back home in Colorado with the pine trees and deer! Beautiful time away, enjoy!

This was the 10th Annual Global Day or Prayer (GDOP), and the second I have been to in Tucson It was so good to see so many people come together in prayer for out city, nation and world. Although the original plans was to have it on the UofA mall again; I feel the last minute change to the west side of Old Main turned out to be for the better. Witt Family Pictures - Agua Caliente Park - Tucson

A week ago Monday I went over to Agua Caliente Park with the Witt family to do some family pictures. Ague Caliente Park is one of the few places in Tucson with water and it makes for a beautiful backdrop. Unfortunately, since I was there on Monday, I found out that you are supposed to have a special permit to do any kind of professional photography. Now I know.

I was a little concerned going in that photographing a family of 11 could be a major headache; the Witt's however made it as easy on me as I hopefully did on them. They were such a blessing to work with (Thank you).

This year for the National Day of Prayer in Tucson we held various smaller meetings around the city as opposed to the typical city-wide gathering. Crazy Beautiful

It was crazy and it was definitely beautiful. Table Mountain was really a spur-of-the-moment hike, although it has been somewhat on my "to-hike" list since moving to Tucson. With it 'now' being May 1st, I had a feeling we wouldn't have such beautiful hiking weather again until probably next fall. Table mountain has a very distinct look when compared to the surrounding mountains. You would know it if you saw it; its the white, squarish, shrub covered mountain on the southwest side of the Catalina's. From the northwest, it is the highest point of Pusch Ridge. The only drawback to it being an amazingly cool mountain is the fact that half the trip is bushwhacking up the side of the mountain through cactus and other not-so-friendly plants. All in all it was well worth the trip

The First mile or so from the parking lot is just taking you to the mouth of the canyon. This is the view looking southeast towered downtown and the Tucson Mountains.

Our first glimpse of "Table Mountain" since starting the hike. Looks a little farther than I thought.

Not long before leaving the canyon floor, and the trail, we came to this beautiful pool for a short rest.

About halfway up the clouds begin to look a little ominous. Thankfully this did not last

The Friends we Meet

I got home around 11pm the other night and was ready to crawl into bed and crash. To my surprise I found this little gecko sitting on my pillow. I was hoping he would give me free car insurance; no such luck. Anyways, I couldn't just go to bed with a gecko in my hands; so we did a little photo shoot.

He was only about 3 inches long from head to tail; and I had him sitting on the back side of a small pad of paper

Thank God it wasn't a giant spider sitting on my pillow or I probably would not have been crawling into bed for a long time!

Something New

As I was walking home last night I noticed the sliver of a moon appearing in the western sky. I was pretty excited and proceeded to run home to grab my camera. Finding a good composition with the vast array of houses, power-lines and trees was a bit of a challenge; but I think we got it!

I would love to say that the colors in this are all natural; but they're not. I did a little post-production sprucing to this.

Downtown Globe

Globe is one of those places that had a mining boom (or two) and then that was it. Originally it was silver; and more recently copper. Unfortunately, many of the mines in the area have closed their doors due to a decreased copper demand leaving globe in a state of constant depression. That being said; I believe their is hope for Globe as is really cool old town in a great location.

The Arizona Eastern Railway

The Gila County Jail was originally in the back of the Courthouse (just to the south); but due the the "wild" nature of globe was over crowded as soon as it opened. Plans were quickly made for a new jail; which opened its doors in 1910. We were fortunate to not only get the standard tour, but also the extended upstairs tour. I have a feeling our lovely tour guide was more excited than we were!

Fleur de Tucson: Birthday Surprise

This past Thursday was my friend Valerie's birthday. As a surpirse for Valerie, Jason (Mr. Boyfriend) decided to take her on a surprise hot air balloon ride with a couple good friends. This surprise involved waking Valerie up at 5:30am and kidnapping her. I'm not going to lie; it was kind of fun. Mike Fleury of Fleur de Tucson was our amazing balloon pilot. He has over 28 years of experience; and was very knowledgeable about everything we flew over.

Thank you Jason for having me along, thank you Valerie for being born, and thank you Mike for flying. It was an amazing trip!

Krissi Marie - Fashion Shoot

Friday night I met up with Krissi over at Gates Pass for a modeling shoot. Shoot aside; it was just an amazingly beautiful evening. Some light clouds, a soft breeze, and the peaceful sound of crickets chirping away.
Krissi has been modeling for over a year and is currently working on building a fashion portfolio; she was great to work with. I always enjoy doing portfolio shoots as they really allow both parties to be creative and have fun; but at the same time provide for a great learning experience. Can you Hear Their...Silence: Rally for North Korea

One week ago today was a rally to raise awareness of the human rights crisis in North Korea. Many people are completely unaware to what is going on there; go back a year and I would have been like "what crisis?" As many of you know, writing is not my forte. I often let my photographs speak for themsevles and this will be no excetion. Hike to Seven Falls

This Past Wednesday I went on a fairly-spur-of-the-moment hike up to Seven Falls with my friend Derrek. I had never been there before and thoroughly enjoyed the hike. The creek was really rushing right now from all the moisture we have had; which made for a beautiful trip.

Numerous times we had to remove our shoes and wade through the water as the creek was exceptionally high.

I was a little more cautious about the jumping the creek then Derrek was as I was carrying a camera backpack full of gear (and didn't want to fall in with it)

Bear Canyon

On one hand; I am glad Derrek made it across without getting wet. On the other hand though; it would have made for an interesting picture if he hadn't. I obviously waded this one as it was a little far to risk.

Derrek took this picture of me about the cross over onto the rock. He also captured one of me hanging onto a small tree that's about to bend and dump me in the creek (I didn't fall in). Unfortunately it came out blurry

Seven Falls

I would love to do a sunrise shoot at Seven falls as it would provide for some exceptional light. The only problem is finding somebody who would want to hike the four miles up the trail with me in the dark to get there at dawn. I realize some people might do this by themselves... I'm not one of those people.

Just before sunset this past Wednesday the overcast sky lit up as the sun peeked through a sliver in the clouds. If you were to look the opposite direction you would have caught a beautiful full rainbow. All this lasted maybe five minutes at most before the sun set behind the clouds and everything returned to the cool grey that it was.

Jared and Marci: Tucson Wedding

It was a beautiful day for a wedding; the mountains were covered in a fresh dusting of snow and the sun would occasionally come out making them shine. Perhaps it was just a beautiful day in general; because if I wasn't at the wedding I would have been hiking up the side of a mountain. The ceremony was held at Catalina Methodist Church near Speedway and Country Club, and the reception was held down at the Pima Air and Space Museum. I had never been down to the museum before and it is a very cool place. Although it is a difficult place to photograph; you do get some very unique images. Congratulations to Jared and Marci, may God bless your marriage and the many years you will spend together.

Ragged Top Mountain

...Or as we jokingly called it, "Mount Doom"

Ragged Top is a relatively small mountain about 40 miles north-west of Tucson. Despite it's size though; it is incredibly rugged and beautiful. It is about a 2 mile trek up to the 3907 ft. summit, sans trail, and then another 2 mile trek back down the mountain with the hope that you find your car. Because their is no trail; you really have to keep a close eye on where your car is; and where you are at. It is easy to lose when you get to the flat ground.

Just the other day I was Cold Stone Creamery and had to ask "who's Larry Fitzgerald" Yeah, so maybe I don't follow football; but when I saw this view of the Cardinals stadium juxtaposed against this field, I was a fan! Cesar and Lindsey: Post Wedding Portraits

Cesar and Lindsey had a beautiful wedding this past April up at the Vistoso Golf Club. Their wedding happened to be one of the few weddings I have ever been to as just a guest. They unfortunately didn't get any really nice portraits from their wedding and decided to have me do some this past Sunday. It turned out to be the perfect morning for portraits. We started part way up Redington Pass Road; and then drove down to Agua Caliente Park. Both are beautiful locations for pictures.

Shantelle: Estes Park, Colorado

Colorado has been unusually cold for early December, and despite the recent weather, we still went ahead and did the shoot. Shantelle was definitally a trooper when it came to braving the weather. I was bundled up in multiple layers, a coat, gloves and boots and was still cold. My brother, Jimmy, was also a quite a trooper drving up to Estes Park in the snow; among other things. Thank you to them both for making this shoot possible!

Colorado

I wanted to send a quick update about my travels up here in beautiful Colorado... so I am! Thanksgiving was a great time with the family; we had nearly 20 this year (It seems to grow all the time). The last two days I spent up in the mountains west of Fort Collins at my parents new cabin. They have been working on it the past two summers and its beautiful (quite posche for a little cabin.). Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving; I'll write again soon!

Crossing Sarnoff Promo Shoot

Last night I had a great photoshoot with local band Crossing Sarnoff. We shot down by the new 4th Ave. Underpass (Which makes for a great location) as well as at Club Congress. Unfortunately we weren't able to get a lot in at the club before they started setting up for a show that night and kicked us out. The guys were a lot of fun to work with and hopefully we will get the opportunity to do it again in the future. Be sure to check out their website as well as their official Myspace page. Mr. and Mrs. Darren Scott

As far as weddings go; this ranks up with the best wedding I have ever been to. Both Darren and Terra are always such a joy to work with; I'm sure this is evident from the pictures. Their wedding itself was also incredible creative, beautiful and fun. Put it all together and you have one great time!

Half of the cupcake was almost lost to the floor; saved only by a quick catch on Darren's part. As I always heard growing up; "If your going to be clumsy you gotta be quick!"

Mount Lemon Moonrise

This past Monday it was nearly 90* in Tucson, which for the beginning of November is a bit hotter than normal. It was the perfect excuse to join a couple friends up Mount Lemon for an afternoon hike. As we were getting back to the trail head just after sunset; this brilliant full moon came up over the hill to the east. Enjoy

Reach 2009

If you can think back a year to last years Reach Event; you will remember what a success it was! In regards of turnout; the tons of food collected for the Gospel Rescue Mission, and the hundreds who either gave their lives to Christ or rededicated their lives to Christ. As a result of last years Success; Newsboys, along with Global Tribe, decided to come back to Tucson for another Reach event. Thank you to Gospel Rescue Mission for all your help setting up; tearning down, and for feeding all the volunteers. Thank you as well to the countless volunteers and everyone who donated non-perishable food items! You all helped make this year another success!

I had the privilege of meeting the guys from Me In Motion (seen above) both before and after they performed. Great group of guys; be sure to check out their website and music.

This is a digital montage I put together a couple years back for a class assignment. The theme of the project was "dreams", and we had to use 7 images to create our montage. This was my dream; or at least what it came out to be. Interpret it as you will; and post your thoughts if you like.

"I find myself once again,
on the precipice of hope.
Freedom is only a step away,
and yet, I am scared to move.

I used to fight these chains I wear,
that weigh on my every thought,
but you spoke the lie; 'they are for your good'
and I think I have given up.

Still... there is hope, calling out my name
I hear it in the night through a silent prayer
'you were made for more,
you were made for me.'
I believe, I beleive,
if only in my dreams"

Post #101 - Mount Lemon

This past week I had a friend visiting from Colorado. It was an unseasonably warm 103* that day, so we made an escape up the mountain. Here are a couple pictures from our trip

As I was climbing down a steep rocky bank on the side of the road I caught a loose spot (one of many) and took a slide down the hill. Rather than throwing the camera; I sacrificed my body.

This is another shot from the Mt. Wrightson hike a few weeks back. A little over half way up the trail we were presented with this beautiful view over the canyon and the desert to the northwest. When the clouds opened up to share a little sunlight on the near hill; I knew that was my chance.

New Wedding Album

I spent a couple days designing a new display wedding album; and this past Tuesday it finally arrived. It really didn't take that long to get here, but when you are excited about something even quick seems like forever. It came out absolutely beautiful. One big idea behind ordering an album was that the internet doesn't do a photograph justice. The ironic thing, though, is that I just took pictures of the album to put up on here! Walters Family Pictures

Mom; I don't know her real name but everyone called her mom; had a bithday this weekend and all the kid's flew into town to celebrate with her. As a surprise they wanted to do some family pictures while everyone was there. What a great gift! We went up to the Westin La Paloma Resort for the pictures and had a good time. Great family to work with; and a beautiful location for pictures.

On our hike last Saturday; I was amazed by how many wildflowers were blooming on our way up. It wasn't until on our way down when I started taking pictures of them that I noticed the vast variety of wildflowers. I hope you enjoy them as much as I did.

Mt. Wrightson Hike

Mt. Wrightson, although not very tall compared to Colorado standards, is the tallest peak in the Tucson area at 9453'. Another notable feature about Mt. Wrightson, as compared to a lot of mountains in the area, is that it has an exposed, rocky summit which offers fantastic views. It was an amazing hike; I hope you enjoy the pictures.

When we started our hike their wasn't a cloud in the sky. By the time we got about 3 miles up the clouds were starting to envelope the ridge. Very Cool!
